Over 400 holiday cards were made and distributed to the student body of Southern Columbia Area High School by S.P.A.R.K. club on December 21 2018. A group of roughly 20 students came together to create cards and personalized envelopes for every high school student in the district. Mrs. Borys, the founder of the club, explains that these cards were a way to, “send some warm wishes home with the students as they left for break.” S.P.A.R.K. club was started in September of 2018 when it was brought to Mrs. Borys’s attention that some students felt a need for “encouragement and positivity” within the student body. S.P.A.R.K. stands for “Spreading Positivity and Random Kindness”. It has become a student run organization that outreaches to the entire community including other school districts in times of need.

Some students see school as a safe haven compared to home, so S.P.A.R.K. members wanted to make sure that everyone had a wonderful holiday. They accomplished this by sending the simplistically sweet holiday cards to all of their peers. One recipient of a card commented, “I enjoyed the card, it was very thoughtful of the club to do something like that for the students.” The cards were an unexpected notion. Among the 20+ students who helped create the cards was Bri Kopp.

Bri is a representative for S.P.A.R.K. club and was personally responsible for writing around 100 of the holiday cards. The entire project took a month to organize and complete and it was well worth it. There was a lot of work that went into these cards and although she made the brunt of them, Bri said, “I was happy to help.” She explained that they would appreciate more members and are currently in search of officers.

S.P.A.R.K. club has many upcoming surprises to help brighten the moods of the students. Some of these include a Valentine’s Day flower fundraiser, and empowering murals in the bathrooms. With the recent and unexpected loss of their daughter, S.P.A.R.K. reached out to the mourning family of Matilda ‘Tilly’ Fabian from Bloomsburg, PA to supply some food for the memorial. They also made a card that was filled with condolences from friends and acquaintances. S.P.A.R.K. is living up to its mission of trying to bring some happiness to students’ lives. A student of Southern Columbia explains, “I think the students benefit from the kindness and thoughtfulness.” When asked if the club is making an impact on the school district. This club has become a great addition to the school and hopefully the positive actions continue to spread happiness and random kindness throughout the school.
